Press Release
November 2006 : Company bosses at risk if their employees use mobile phones when driving
Company bosses could fall foul of the law if police catch members of their staff using mobile phones when driving. This is the warning to Sheffield companies from business advisers and accountants Wingfield Slater, one of Sheffield’s top five independent accountancy practices.
“We understand that the employers of those caught talking on their handheld mobiles whilst driving may be interviewed by the police regarding their company mobile phone policies,” said Wingfield Slater partner John Wingfield. “The employers may then be prosecuted under Health and Safety legislation.”
His advice to companies is to have in place formal written policies regarding mobile phone use which ensure that their employees operate within the law when using their mobiles on the move.
The advice is contained in Wingfield Slater’s Financial Monitor advisory newsletter which is emailed to Wingfield Slater clients and is also available for anyone to download from its website, www.wingfieldslater.co.uk .
The newsletter contains business advice ranging from VAT on property conversions, through fire safety in the workplace, to the recent rise in the national minimum wage. It also offers comprehensive advice on how to protect against identity theft, a crime that affects more than 100,000 people every year.
